PRESENTAZIONE - CURRICULUM

Stefano Grazia è stato uno dei primi in Italia a studiare Tabla e la musica Indiana e, partire dal 1979 ha beneficiato di differenti esperienze di insegnamento da parte di Maestri tra i più qualificati delle differenti tradizioni musicali indiane del nord (gharana) quali Pt. Sankha Chatterjee di Calcutta e Pt. Pooran Maharaj di Benares. Nella sua attività concertistica ha accompagnato in più di 100 concerti musicisti indiani di fama internazionale.

Laureato in Indologia (Università di Bologna, 1985) Stefano Grazia è stato uno dei primi in Italia a studiare la musica Indiana essendo stato iniziato all’arte delle Tabla nel 1979 dal Maestro Pt. Sankha Chatterjee di Calcutta, di cui è stato il primo allievo italiano. Ha frequentato per oltre 15 anni i corsi del Maestro a Venezia (Fondazione Cini) Berlino e Calcutta. In quegli anni ha incontrato anche il leggendario Ravi Shankar e il Maestro di Tabla Ustad Alla Rakha, partecipando ai loro workshop e Master classes.

Dal 1999 ha iniziato l’attività concertistica, accompagnando numerosi musicisti indiani di fama internazionale in Italia, Francia, Svizzera, Germania, Belgio, Austria, Grecia e India in oltre 100 concerti. Nel 2003 ha realizzato per la TACTUS una incisione discografica con il maestro di Sitar Shahid Parvez con cui ha effettuato alcune tournée nel 2004, 2008, 2011, 2013. Sempre nel 2003 dà origine all'Associazione Culturale MUSA www.artemusa.it per lo sviluppo degli incontri interculturali e musicali tra Oriente e Occidente.

Nel 2005 ha allargato i propri studi musicali alla Benares Gharana frequentando per 10 anni il maestro Pt. Pooran Maharaj (esponente della più importante famiglia di maestri di tabla di Benares) ed il suo allievo Shri Nihar Mehta.

Nel 2006 entra a far parte del progetto INDIA WORLD di Bologna in qualità di direttore artistico per gli spettacoli sull’India e sull’ Oriente. Nel 2007 ha preso parte al festival Internazionale di Akko (Israele) con l’Ensemble Ananké. Nel 2007 – 2008 ha collaborato con il M° di flauto Massimo Mercelli sui progetti East meets West per il Festival Les Floraisons Musicales. Nel 2009 ha partecipato al festival POIESIS di Fabriano nell’ambito del progetto ‘I Cieli della Terra’, nel 2010 ha dato vita all’ensemble RANJANI, danze e musiche del Nord India, nel 2013 – 2014 ha preso parte al progetto KAJAL di musiche contemporanee ispirate al sud-est asiatico del Maestro di percussioni Simone Beneventi. Dal 2011 collabora stabilmente anche con il Maestro di sarod Partho Sarothy. Nel 2012 e 2014 è stato tra i partecipanti selezionati della Tabla Master Class di Zakir Hussein a Nizza, organizzato dalla prestigiosa Saptak INDIA di Shri Nihar Mehta.

Oltre all’attività musicale tiene conferenze sulla musica e la cultura indiana e sui rapporti interculturali tra India e Occidente. Dal 2008 collabora con il centro insegnanti Yoga di Bologna, AYBO - Ashtanga Yoga Bologna di Giuliano Vecchiè.

PRESENTATION

Stefano Grazia was one of the first in Italy to study Indian Classical Music and Tabla. Starting from 1978 he has got different experiences of teachings by most qualified Maestros of different musical tradition of North India (gharana) such us Pt. Sankha Chatterjee from Calcutta and  Pt. Pooran Maharaj from Benares. In his concert activity he has accompanied in more than 100 concerts several Indian musicians of International fame.

Graduated in Indology (University of Bologna, 1985) was one of the very first in Italy to study Indian music, having been initiated in 1979 to the art of Tabla by Maestro Pt. Sankha Chatterjee of Calcutta. He was actually the first Italian student of this great Teacher and he attended for over 15 years his courses in Venice (Fondazione Cini) Berlin and Kolkata. In those years he also met the legendary Ravi Shankar and the tabla Master Ustad Alla Rakha, following his unic Master Class in Venice in 1980.
Since 1999 he began the concert activity, accompanying many Indian musicians of international fame in Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Greece and India in over 100 concerts of Indian Classical music. In 2003 he had the great opportunity to meet and to seat with the legendary Sitar Maestro Shahid Parvez with whom he made an official CD recording and a few music tours in Italy (2004, 2008, 2011, 2013).

In 2005 he extended his musical studies to the Benares Gharana attending for 10 years the classes of Tabla Maestro Pt. Pooran Maharaj (exponent of the most important Family of Tabla Masters of Benares) and his senior disciple Shri Nihar Mehta.

In 2006 he joined the INDIA WORLD project of Bologna as artistic director for events on India and Asia. In 2007 he took part in the International festival of Akko (Israel) with the Ensemble Ananké (Jewish-Sephardic ancient music). In 2007 - 2008 he co-operated with flute Maestro Massimo Mercelli on East meets West projects in the French Festival Les Floraisons Musicales. In 2009 he took part to the Poiesis Festival of Fabriano in the project 'The Heavens of the Earth'. In 2010 he created the ensemble Ranjani, dances and music of North India, in 2013-2014 took part in KAJAL, a contemporary music project inspired to Southeast Asia project, directed by percussion Master Simone Beneventi. Since 2011 he co-operates regularly with the sarod maestro Partho Sarothy. In 2012 and 2014 he was among the selected participants of Tabla Master Class Zakir Hussein in Nice, organized by the prestigious Saptak INDIA of Shri Nihar Mehta.

Besides musical activity he lectures on Indian music and Indian culture and on intercultural relations between India and the West.
